A TRIBUTE TO ONE OF OUR VOLUNTEERS WHO RECENTLY CROSSED THE BAR – Capt Colin Tritton ESM
Marine Rescue Batemans Bay
Colin Tritton, known to so many of us simply as Captain Col, joined the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol in July 1999. From the moment he arrived, he brought with him a lifetime of experience from his years as a Diver and Vessel Master with the Water Police. Colin was a highly qualified commercial Master and Marine Engine Driver, and he shared that knowledge generously as a TAFE NSW maritime lecturer.
Over the years, he taught countless people: Marine Rescue Coxswains and Masters, members of the Water Police, AMSA and Border Force, Commercial mariners, and even local high school students just starting their journey on the water. His influence stretches far wider than many will ever realise. One of the more memorable moments in his time with us was when he helped officiate the wedding of two members aboard the Batemans Bay Waveney 44014, a perfect example of his warm, generous spirit.
In 2009, like all of us, Colin became part of the newly formed Marine Rescue NSW. He played a big role in helping members through TAFE-based training tailored to our vessels, and he was always there to mentor new Masters. During tough search-and-rescue operations, especially in rough conditions, Colin’s calm voice and steady hands were often exactly what was needed. His close-quarters handling and command were something many of us aspired to. Even as his health declined in later years, he never stepped away from the Unit.
He continued to attend crew weekends, mentor members, and share his knowledge, even if it meant doing so from the shore or through desktop training. In 2022, he was awarded Life Membership of Marine Rescue Batemans Bay, a recognition he truly earned.
He also continued teaching maritime studies at TAFE alongside his long-time friend, Rob Moldovan, a partnership that shaped many careers. In June 2024, Colin was honoured with the Emergency Services Medal (ESM) in the King’s Birthday Honours, recognising his lifelong commitment to community and
emergency service.
Although a humble man Colin’s awards include:
NSW Police Long Service Medal
MRNSW Long Service Medal with Clasp
National Medal with 2nd Clasp
Emergency Services Medal
Colin also received the Marine Rescue Batemans Bay Unit Life Membership.
Colin Triton’s legacy isn’t just in the certificates, medals, or qualifications. It lives on in the people he trained, the volunteers he guided, and the countless boaters who are alive today because of his actions, many of whom will never know his name, but owe him more than they realise.
His ESM citation says it best:
“His contribution in numerous roles, operational courage and willingness to share his
extensive knowledge and experience to build the safety and professionalism of his
Fellow volunteers are driven by an abiding and selfless commitment to service.”
Fair winds and following seas.
